Editorial Reviews:

Album Description
The Outsider has been all about commitment: From Walter's desire to create songs that speak to the soul as well as the mind, the producer (John Porter), who added his musical experience creating a partnership in finding the best possible expression for Walter's intentions, to the musicians who each in their own expert way added a unique and strong statement - there has been a unique sense of team work throughout, filling Walter with a thankfulness to be able to surround himself with people of so much talent. Walter Trout is a blues guitarist, singer and songwriter of his own band.

5 out of 5 stars Aways Good To Have Some "Fresh Trout" To Serve Up To Guests   September 1, 2008

What can I say that hasn't already been said?....OK..I'll try...Walter plays the guitar like an Olympic sprinter runs a race....He plays every song like it might be his last...All out...and heartfelt...Some say he plays too fast, too loud, too much emphasis on lead guitar...It's a matter of opinion....in my opinion..I happen to like it..
In this album Walter starts it off with "Welcome To The Human Race" which is classic..."Walter"..Great tune...
This album also shows a little of a softer and deeper "Walter"...This record is a must have for any die hard fans of Walter but also would be a great listen for those new to his music...
All around a very good album that I am happy to have in my collection and I am always very proud to serve up some "Fresh Trout" for my guests...This is well done Trout for all.....Thanks for listening.....Ragamuffin

5 out of 5 stars A very solid effort!   August 13, 2008
I'm a fan of the blues but did not have a Walter Trout disc in my collection. I saw this one and decided to make it my first and give him a try. I am thrilled that I did! I can't stop listening to this excellent disc. Walter does play from his gut and as a listener you can feel the soul. His guitar playing is both raw at times yet soft, tender and expressive when necessary. I recommend this disc highly! Enjoy.

2 out of 5 stars Another Bombast Feast!   August 9, 2008

Jeez, Trout is a great guitar player and a fine singer but on every disc he continues to pound us with full blast chords and over the top singing. Finesse is not a word he knows. I saw him in Phoenix and it was the same thing live. Why does he associate loud with good? It's not how many chords you play or how loud you are - any guitar player can do that. Too bad because he really is a cut above the other blues rockers, but this CD is just more of his never ending bombast.

4 out of 5 stars A little more variety, but basically sticking with the formula that works...   July 30, 2008

I'm a big Walter Trout fan. While his guitar and songwriting are not exactly revolutionary, I admire his ability to continue a career putting out honest, meat and potatoes blues rock in a world dominated by musical CRAP. I agree with Dr. Bluesman to an extent, that he does use a certain amount of cliches in his songs (the one I notice most is the phrase "Just a man...."), but people do expect him to stay in the box musically speaking and not get too out there--like Jonny Lang. Which means a more objective (and more forgiving) way to describe his cliches here and there is "sticking to a formula that works"--like AC/DC, for example. And on top of that, Walter is just a down-to-earth, helluva nice guy who loves his music and his fans.

He does manage to branch out a little on this effort with some more folk-tinged numbers while still doling out a hefty serving of his tried and true blues rock. Walter is a throwback to the day when guitar and singing talent mattered more than how many outfits some one-named bimbo changes into during her video on MTV!!

5 out of 5 stars BIG DOG   July 26, 2008

Walter Trouts playing is above and beyond....and his vocals are some of the best I've been blessed to hear....Walter, his band and his friends that kick it around with him have got the Gift....not many do.....not many ever will....
