Durable and well-designed. December 6, 2008 My son has had this toy for at least six months. He plays with it every day, and is especially fond of the music mode. He loves the flashing lights and buttons to press in any mode. I haven't seen any learning advances, but he's still very young and not talking much yet. Well, okay, he knows how to turn it off and on. And I just asked him where the 'square' was and he pressed the right button.
The cheery Vtech voice and songs can be a little annoying, especially when it attempts to determine if the child is still interested before hibernating: "Are you there? Time to sleep!" But it eventually just became background noise for me.
We've had to change the batteries twice since we've owned it, and he regularly throws it out of his playpen when he's done with it, onto wooden floor. I'm astonished at how well it's held up. We've gotten an amazing amount of play out of it so far.
Gigantic FAIL for durability November 30, 2008 I bought this laptop and another Vtech noisemaker of doom and both have driven me to make my first online product review.
Within a few weeks of purchase the laptop developed a problem. It is constantly looping the sound it makes when you open the cover or turn it on. I opened it up and bypassed the switch but it still has that problem intermittently. Another Vtech toy purchased for my son has the exact same issue.
I would have pursued warranty coverage or something of that nature but I would rather just throw it away. I don't see any educational value to it because the button effects are too random (in my opinion). Too much talking for a toy meant for a baby. The playschool tree that you stick a ball inside gets more attention from him.
Great Laptop November 21, 2008 My son loves this laptop. His favorite thing to do is slam the lid shut! He's dropped it from his high chair and it still works like a charm. Very sturdy and provides lots of educational fun.
Shoddy November 15, 2008 My daughter has four electronic Vtech toys and I would not recommend this brand. Within a month of opening each of them, and sometimes within hours, they start to freeze, stutter, often reboot, or get stuck in loops. This makes the toys even more annoying than when they work.
For example, this particular toy sings "My first laptop is so fun, it's made just for meeeeeeeeee, learning all about my home, come along and see!!!" to the tune of "Yankee Doodle" after a few seconds of non-use. Every time my daughter looks away from the toy for a few seconds, I hear this. It gets very old, very fast.
Besides that, I see absolutely no educational value in this device or any of Vtech's toys. I'm not fond of this brand and would encourage you to avoid it.
awesome baby laptop! October 23, 2008 I got this for my 7 month old because he was continually grabbing at the mouse and keyboard every time I had him on my lap at the computer. He absolutely loves this toy! He is fascinated by the lights and sounds, and loves to hit the keys and push on the mouse. The price is great as well. Overall, this is probably one of the best purchases that I have made.
