Product Description From Americas #1 bestselling crime writers comes the extraordinary new Kay Scarpetta novel.
Leaving behind her private forensic pathology practice in Charleston, South Carolina, Kay Scarpetta accepts an assignment in New York City, where the NYPD has asked her to examine an injured man on Bellevue Hospitals psychiatric prison ward. The handcuffed and chained patient, Oscar Bane, has specifically asked for her, and when she literally has her gloved hands on him, he begins to talkand the story he has to tell turns out to be one of the most bizarre she has ever heard.
The injuries, he says, were sustained in the course of a murder . . . that he did not commit. Is Bane a criminally insane stalker who has fixed on Scarpetta? Or is his paranoid tale true, and it is he who is being spied on, followed and stalked by the actual killer? The one thing Scarpetta knows for certain is that a woman has been tortured and murderedand more violent deaths will follow. Gradually, an inexplicable and horrifying truth emerges: Whoever is committing the crimes knows where his prey is at all times. Is it a person, a government? And what is the connection between the victims?
In the days that follow, Scarpetta; her forensic psychologist husband, Benton Wesley; and her niece, Lucy, who has recently formed her own forensic computer investigation firm in New York, will undertake a harrowing chase through cyberspace and the all-too-real streets of the cityan odyssey that will take them at once to places they never knew, and much, much too close to home.
Throughout, Cornwell delivers shocking twists and turns, and the kind of cutting-edge technology that only she can provide. Once again, she proves her exceptional ability to entertain and enthrall.

Worth losing sleep over ........ December 4, 2008
Stopping only the eat the occasional bathroom break and an accidental short nap I read this book cover to cover without putting it down - amazing details, great and softer characters with fabulous plots and twists - as a long term fan I truly feel this is Ms. Cornwell's best work ever!
Patricia Cornwell's Scarpetta December 4, 2008 In her latest masterpiece, Patricia Cornwell returns to her literary niche. Scarpetta is an exciting, gruesome crime thriller that keeps you reading from the moment you pick it up. What sets Cornwell's work apart from others in this genre is that she does not allow you the reader to get bogged down by the forensics of the investigation. She always manages to pull you back in by her amazing gift for character development.
Scarpetta- a must-have for the holidays!! December 4, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I loved Scarpetta because of its unique take on the criminal justice system. Cornwell's characters are interesting and complex, exposing their entire personalities from their faults to their convictions. The story pulls you into the heart of the drama and makes you believe you are standing right next to the characters as the story unfolds around you. But it is the dynamic of the relationships between the characters that keeps you riveted. It is almost impossible to pull yourself away from the book. An extremely satisfying experience! Another plus is that Cornwell provides just enough background information for those who haven't read the prior novels in the series. So if Putnam comes out with a Scarpetta box set- I am definitely buying it!

I thought that Benton was dead December 4, 2008 2 out of 8 found this review helpful
In the last Cornwell book that I read, Benton died. His wife and daughters were at his funeral. In this book Benton and Kay are married......... Now, if he really did not die this should be covered in ALL the later books so that there is no confusion. Many of us do not read the books in order of published date. I thought that there was a new character with the old name.
