5 out of 5 stars A tense thriller   November 15, 2008
0 out of 1 found this review helpful

Rosalyn Landor's TV credits and narrative skills enhance this story of Ismay, who recalls the day her stepfather is discovered dead in the bathtub and lives a nightmare nine years later, still in the same house with her sister. When her little sister becomes involved with a man for the first time, Ismay's memories of the event won't be halted in this tense thriller.

2 out of 5 stars Not what I expected   October 24, 2008
I am not sure what to think of this book. It being written by Ruth Rendell, I expected a mystery, but it really is more of a story about relationships. There is a mystery, but it is secondary and no detective is brought in to solve it. The main focus is on the sisters Ismay and Heather and their interactions with each other, their significant others and their immediate family. Throughout the book, I felt that there was something missing, something that makes the story worthwhile.

4 out of 5 stars First Lady of Psychological Suspense   October 9, 2008
For the first time, I actually guessed the ending of a Ruth Rendell novel, and was a bit disappointed in doing so, but once again, Rendell's characters are so richly drawn and their psyches so complex that I still couldn't stop reading. Rendell really has no peer.

2 out of 5 stars A bad Rendell?   August 18, 2008

I love Rendell's books and between those and her Vine ones, I have been kept very busy this summer catching up. Tried this newer one expecting the same, and was quite disappointed. The twist at the end helped, but the characters were lifeless, the plot really nothing to base any mystery on, and for a psychological thriller, there was really little suspense. I know that sometimes writers have to write a book on a schedule; perhaps thats what happened here, because honestly if this was the first one I'd ever read I'd be hard pressed to read another. Fortunately there are many more of hers that I haven't read yet, hopefully this one will be the only lemon.

I enjoyed this book very much. It has interesting characters,
lots of anticipated suspence, and the usual excellent story by
Ruth Rendell.
