Great camera, except for distortion December 3, 2008 I like the Canon 870 because it is easy to use, is compact, has great battery life, and has a 28mm equivilent wide angle lens. The only draw back is the lens quality which is sharp enough, but has noticable "barrel" distortion at the wide angle setting. This causes otherwise straight walls to be slightly curved outwards at the sides of the photo. This is a minor flaw considering the price and value.
Wouldn't Buy Again December 2, 2008 We have had nothing but problems with this camera. We have had it for just over a year and it has been in the shop for repair 3 times.
When we were looking to buy a digital camera, we looked at many styles, and we liked this one the best. It had a lot of nice features, and picture quality was very good. The only downside was that there was no viewfinder, so on a bright sunny day it's kind of hard to see the LCD.
We have taken very good care of this camera. After about 10 months, the mechanism that extended and opened the lens broke. We sent it back to Canon for repair and then supposedly fixed it and sent it back. When we got it back, it had the same problem, only with a slight variation. We could now hear gears spinning and griding inside when the lens tried to extend.
We sent it back to Canon again. The 2nd repair request date was 1 month and 6 days after the first. They fixed it again and sent it back to us.
This time, the lens would extend properly, but the door that opens up to uncover the lens wouldn't open.
It's currently back at Canon again for the third time. Given the average time of about 3 weeks for each repair, allowing shipping and repair time, this camera has been out of our possession for about 2 1/2 months. We've only owned it for 14 months.
It is a nice camera, but ours appears to be a piece of junk. We're also not very impressed with Canon's service.
Love it November 25, 2008 I got this camera 3 weeks ago and think it is fabulous. I love Canon cameras, so a Powershot was a must for me. I spent awhile debating between the 870 and 880, but decided to go with the 870 because of some of the sketchy reviews the 880 was receiving, and I am so happy with me decision.
I went to a bachelorette party over the weekend, and the nighttime option worked wonderfully on all the pictures I took in bars. Several other girls were taking pictures, but mine turned out the clearest and brightest.
I also like how quickly the camera turns on. This isn't really a feature you think about, until you miss the perfect shot because your camera is taking forever to load.
The color options are also a lot of fun - black and white, sepia, all the vivid colors, etc.
Canon SD870 IS November 24, 2008 I really like the wide angle lens that this camera has. I would rate higher except that I am concerned that the lens is susceptible to sticking if it gets exposed to sand or grit. My previous SD800 IS died this death a little bit after the 1 year warranty lapsed (and I believe that the warranty did not cover this type of problem anyway). I also like the dedicated button to go to viewing mode. This is a definite improvement over the SD800 IS.
Cannon supershot camera November 23, 2008 We took the camera on vacation two weeks ago. It took great pictures and was very easy to use and small enough to carry in my hand or hook on a belt. Delivery was faster than I thought it would be even though we paid nothing extra for shipping. I would definitely recommend this camera.
